Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relatively rare, progressive disease that affects the nervous system and leads to a gradual loss of muscle function. This results in a loss of strength and eventually in paralysis. ALS is diagnosed more commonly in men than women and often only begins when a person reaches adulthood. The exact cause of ALS is not yet known.
